Meet the creator of MathsBites.
Hi! I’m Penny.
Up until I decided to focus on helping parents, I was a dedicated primary school teacher and have over 30 years of experience in teaching in primary schools.
I’ve have always been passionate about making maths fun and accessible for my students, and students right across the school, particularly in my curriculum leadership role of Pedagogical Mentor (weird name, right?) where I got to help teachers with different maths strategies, planning, teaching and assessment ideas.
I loved seeing those ‘lightbulb’ moments, when things suddenly ‘clicked’ and concepts were no longer strangers, but connected, and strategies made sense. Their little faces would just light up, and they felt confident … and happy … and wanted more!
When you’re a teacher, you live for those moments. When you’re a parent, you live for those too…
Why MathsBites?
I created MathsBites because for too long, parents have been left out of the equation (pardon the pun) and the gap between your primary school days and how things are taught now is HUGE…
…and because your child needs your help. In the busy-ness of everyday life at school, there is just not enough time to give some of these maths concepts the time and practice that is required to build a deep understanding … and a deep understanding means that your child can apply these concepts. Teachers are doing their absolute best, but there are only so many hours in the day.
That’s where you come in. Your help at home, with homework, or through incorporating maths into your everyday, ordinary activities is crucial, but, if you don’t know what your child is learning, how can you help?
Unless you have been kept up to date with all of the changes in maths, particularly the strategies and the language, homework time will be hard … tedious … frustrating … and maths gets a bad rap!
So, I built MathsBites … for you. Every other program is geared towards children or teachers, but this one is for you. And because you’re busy, I have been very mindful of time. The videos are short, but packed full of information.
With my guidance, you will understand what your child is learning, how they are learning it, and why they are learning it this way, so that you can confidently support your child throughout the year.
